Meet Rachael, Shane, and Toby. They were our stellar Bostonian WWOOFers from August 26th- 30th. In this episode I interview them and learn about some of their experiences that lead them to this very moment.
I tried to make the sound/ volume more normal but I'm not very good at it yet. The sound might be louder and softer in places because of the heavy amount of editing. Come see what we are up to at www.havenhomestead.com Please consider supporting the show at www.patreon.com/havenhomestead Learn more about WWOOFing at www.woofusa.org music intro/outro is: State of Massachusetts by Dropkick Murphys Thanks for listening!

The Mother Earth News Fair is an event that I think everyone should attend at least once in their life (Every year would be better). This year we went to the fair in Albany, OR. It was really neat. There were so many neat presentations, vendors, demonstrations, and people. This was our second time going to this event and each time I really love it.

Rabbit ear mites are a pain in the...ear. Rabbits are among the most useful animal on the homestead but they can, and probably will, get ear mites. Mites are the most common parasite that effects domesticated rabbits. Today's episode is a short one on identification and treatment for rabbit ear mites, plus I give you my secret recipe for the medicine that we use on our bunnies.

In today's episode I talk about the major alternative energy options for the small scale homestead. Mainly solar, hydro, wind and human. There are many more ways to make power but these are the most viable for a small sustainable homestead.

The Luffa ( L. aegyptiaca) is an amazing plant. It has so many uses such as, edible flowers, edible fruit, shade producing vines, and of course luffas made from the fully mature fruit which can be sold.
They are easy to grow but need a longish growing season. The plants need 150-200 days to reach full maturity. The young fruit can be eaten raw or cooked in a variety of dishes. Almost every south east asian country has their own dish made from this useful plant. In today's episode we discussed the long-term power outages. These power outages are typically three days or longer. They could be due to weather, natural disaster, or war time situations. The number one rule is to relax. If you freak out, bad things will happen.
Something fun you can do is have a blackout party. You can do fun things like eat ice cream that will go bad in your freezer, have a treasure hunt, play board games, read books, and so much more! It's important to have a power outage kit. Some items in the kit are water, sleeping bags, food, flashlights, batteries for flashlights, candles, phone car chargers, a generator, fuel for generator, AM/FM radio, phone numbers for the utility company, and a map to emergency services. If the outage lasts three days or more, here are some steps to help you know what to do. On day one you should just hunker down and keep yourself busy. By day two you need to eat or preserve all of your perishable food. By day three you should decide whether you need to: leave your home, stay in your home, or stay in your home and help other people. Just remember rule number one, Don't Panic! If you are prepared you have nothing to worry about. www.havenhomestead.com www.patreon.com/havenhomestead Thanks for Listening! |
