The Great Luffa Experiment

Haven Homestead is what some folks like to call a "hobby farm." It may be a hobby farm on steroids, or we may call it something like a "lifestyle farm" or homestead, or something more appropriate, but whatever we call it, it wouldn't be a sustainable if we didn't have some way to pay for it. Hence, we have embarked on the Great Luffa Experiment.

A Christmas Angel, The Kickstarter

I'm trying to share this story with as many people as possible. The little book was created by my daughter and I when she was just four years old. It's been an ebook, and now I've reformatted it so that other folks can enjoy this story as a board book, too.

The story is about a little angel who finds a big way to help at the First Christmas and it would make a wonderful gift to any child. If you are interested in getting a copy for you or a loved one, please visit www.kickstarter.com and search for, A Christmas Angel: The Board Book. Find a level that fits your budget and enjoy this book with your family for years to come.

Thanks for your help!
Lindsay

Protect Your Home Against Wildfires

There's nothing as scary as the thought of having my home burn down. Especially since we just built it! On Tuesday, my local fire department is teaching a class on being Firewise. (Here's the link to the community meeting flyer if you are interested!)

I feel lucky that I live in a Firewise Community, and I wanted to share some tips on protecting your homes from wildfires. Especially since summer burn bans are just around the corner. With that in mind, I've posted this lovely infographic from Firewise.org. Be sure to check it out, and head on over to their website to find out more about how you can be Firewise, too!

It's not the camper trials one. That one is still in the works. BUT this one is just as awesome. It's called,

"How to DIY Anything: The Ultimate Maker Mindset"

and I've been told that it's something to be proud of.

Prepping should not be fear-driven. Prepping should be for the purpose of creating peace. I truly believe this. As such, I've written a manifesto. Read my manifesto below and then use this checklist to do something that creates peace in your life today.

Things you can do to create peace in your life today:
  • learn something important
  • do something kind
  • get out of debt
  • find some one or something to trust

Read the manifesto below by clicking on "Read More." Then tell me this:
How do you feel about prepping? Leave me a comment and let me know where you stand on this issue.

I'm thinking of writing a book. Actually, I'm thinking of writing several, but specifically, I'm thinking of writing a book about the time spent in the camper and the preparations we made before building our house.

Below you'll find a letter that I've written to anyone interested in our Online School for Sustainability. It's on the long side for the sake of thoroughness. Feel free to scan the headings and read what's of interest. At the end, I invite everyone to take a survey... there's a link to the right and also at the bottom. Please take a few minutes to complete that. Thanks for your time!

Hatching your own chicks may be simple, but it isn't easy. There always seems to be eggs that don't get started, eggs that don't finish, and chicks that don't make it. However, if you can get the hang of it, it's a wonderful thing to do.

As promised, I've put together three tips for hatching and raising chicks for folks who've never done it before, or for those who might want a refresher.

Hatching Eggs

We are hatching or own eggs!!!

Why? Because we need to refresh our laying flock, AND we don't want to pay for chicks when we have a rooster and fertilized eggs of our own.

This year we invested in our own incubator.

Why? Because we can! Not to mention, the whole process is really cool for the kiddos (including the big kids... you know, Chris and I) to experience.

It's been a long time coming, and sometimes waiting has been difficult. No doubt the finished house will be totally worth the wait. I'll keep you posted on some of the things we do as we progress! Thanks to all for the support you have given us! We couldn't be here without you!

(Please pardon all of the exclamation points... I'm really excited!)
