I wonder if he's dyslexic?

There I was, sitting next to my second child at the beginning of his second grade year. He was taking a beginning of the year assessment and he was struggling. Hard. For DAYS.

This was not a new struggle, and it brought me a lot of heartache. I love reading, and I could tell that he just didn't. He struggled so hard with reading and writing. We often ended our language arts lessons in tears. This assessment was no different.

And then the thought struck me like lightening, "I wonder if he's dyslexic?"

Winter Cuddle Up and Read-A-Thon

We decided to do something fun with our last week in February, and I thought it would be great to share what we did, and all the things we learned. In short, we held a fundraiser read-a-thon. It was a great way to get my kids doing all sorts of homeschool learning, raise a little money for the classroom, and have fun while doing it. Scroll through our slideshow below for a quick, visual overview of how it went, and then scroll down for more details!

Getting Started: The First Two Things

If you are just getting started, I recommend doing just two things:
  1. Find out what laws and regulations apply to you and your family.
  2. Find a mentor or friend who can help answer your questions.
This is a good place to start for anyone just getting into the homeschool scene.
When I started homeschooling, I drew strength from other parents who had walked this path before me. I sought out advice, and read all the articles, and made friends with other families and at varying stages in the journey. There are a lot of good people who are willing to help you along the way. All you have to do is reach out.

Each state has it's own homeschool regulations (many have no regulations!) so be sure to check into what is required in your location. I live in Washington, so I will often post resources that apply to other Washingtonians, but a lot of what I share will apply to everyone, or will at least be adaptable. Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) is a great place to start learning what is required of you by law.

Once you've got that taken care of, you can take some time to research methods and curriculum, and all of the other hulabaloo.

One of the best pieces of advice I received starting out, was to have a good mix of traditional school activities and non-traditional learning time. Whatever you choose to do, trust your instincts. There is strength in doing what's best for your family.

    About Lindsay

I have been homeschooling my children for about four years (six if you include preschool years!) and I love every moment. Even the hard ones. Homeschool is a family affair, and family is my everything.

As a writer, photographer, and lover of learning and adventure, I try to make classroom time fun and the rest of the time educational. I hope you find Haven Homeschool uplifting and inspirational.

*** Disclaimer: I am currently a full-time homeschooling mom of three beautiful children, a homesteader with animals and a garden to care for, an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Relief Society President in my ward. I am building this page as I find time, so please bear with me if things seem sparse around here for a little while! ***
